Janet Pilla in Pauline Koner's The Farewell
Hi everyone!

About a year ago I saw Pauline Koner's The Farewell performed by Janet Pilla.  I was so inspired by the piece that I wrote a blog about it!  It also inspired me to do a little online research and learn more about the influential Pauline.  I am excited to learn that this week the Drexel University Dance Program is presenting a lecture/performance, What Makes a Masterpiece in Dance.  Famed Dance Critic Deborah Jowitt will be speaking and Janet Pilla will be performing Koner's The Farewell.  This is free and open to the public, so if you are a dance lover in Philly, I highly recommend attending!  I wouldn't miss it!

Sometimes you just want to have a little FUN!  October is just around the corner, and I plan to do just that!  As I use to say to my percussionist friend Brian Melick, "Why don't we ever just JAM?"  Well the first weekend in October my friend Melissa Chisena is hosting an improv jam open to dancers and musicians!   It should be loads of fun!  Improvisation brings a whole different energy to dance and music and I can't wait to go dance! dance! dance! and feed off the energy of everyone else in the room.  Should be really great!  Maybe I will see you there!  Cheers!

Einstein on the Beach

This Thursday, I am heading up to New York to see Einstein on the Beach at BAM.    The anticipation and excitement I have to see this four and a half hour intermission-less Opera, makes me feel like a kid on Christmas morning.  Kind of a nerdy one too, because not only have I shaken the wrapped gifts a bit, but I have also weighed them, noted the tone and pitch of the sound they make when shaken, taken down their dimensions, and calculated their density.  Okay, maybe I haven't gone that far, but I HAVE been excitedly doing my homework.

The obsession started after watching the film Absolute Wilson last spring, which I recently re-watched.  I soon discovered that they were doing a revival of Einstein on the Beach which includes choreography by Lucinda Childs and music by Philip Glass.  I also discovered that a friend of mine was in it!  I HAD to go!  So this Thursday is the big night!  You can shake that gift all you want but you won't know what's inside until you open it, and experience it first hand.  If you don't know who Robert Wilson is, you should definitely look him up.  Whether you agree, disagree, like or dislike his work, he is an incredibly interesting person who has had a huge impact on art and people.  You can find the film Absolute Wilson on Netflix.  Below are some articles about the upcoming run of Einstein on the Beach!  I can't wait to experience this new world!

National Arts in Education Week

In case you didn't know, this week, Sept 9th-15th, is National Arts in Education week.  What a wonderful thing to celebrate!  Arts in Education is so important in bringing culture to our youth and giving them an alternative outlet for learning.  I feel a great sense of pride and responsibility being an art educator.  While doing outreach work for the Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company, it was not uncommon to have a teacher approach me after a class, and tell me how they watched certain students break out of their shell, becoming fully engaged and active.  It is wonderful to continue working in Arts in Ed since moving to Philadelphia.  I am lucky enough to be a part of The Rock School's Outreach program, and I am excited to be returning to the Gesu school and Khepera Charter School in a couple of weeks!  If you are ever looking for a good cause to support, Arts in Ed is one of them!

The performance I was lucky enough to be a part of this past weekend was a huge success!  There was a great turnout and it was really well received!  Congrats to Pam and Ellie!  It is always a treat to perform with live music.  Between the music and the eleven dancers on stage the energy was electric!  Thank you Ellie for letting me be a part of you wonderful choreography!  Click here to see a review of the show!

Hi All!

I am super excited about a show I have coming up this weekend with Stone Depot Dance Lab!  The performance Go Together is co-produced by Pam Vail and Stone Depot's Ellie Goudie-Averill.  The piece that I am in, I Think I No You From Some Knowhere, is a large energetic group piece with live music by Temple University's Percussion Ensemble.

This is my first time working with Ellie and the creative process has been a satisfying one.  I feel I have gained new ideas and creative tools for making dance from working with her.  I am excited to be on stage for the first time with this large group of talented dancers!  It's going to be a fun one!

To meeting new friends and learning new things I say Cheers!
