Dance Workforce Census

3/13/2012

DANCE/NYC Junior Committee's findings from their Dance Workforce Census is out!  The study gathered information on the income of dance professionals in NYC ages 21-35.  While the study was solely done in NYC, it's an issue that most would agree is nationwide.  I think we owe the members of DANCE/NYC Junior Committee a huge amount of gratitude.  Especially since many of them are dancers who took time out of their already packed schedules to do this.  In a quote that can be viewed in full below, Beverly D'Anne states, "While no answers are posed, the need to find answers is made evident."  I invite dancers and dance enthusiasts alike to check this out and then ask themselves what they might be able to do to better our situation in the dance community.  Like many organizations say while trying to get you to donate money, "No contribution is too small.  Even a dollar makes a difference."  I think introducing someone new to dance and broadening our audience is equivalent to that dollar.  Look at your "budget", see what you can afford, and stay creative!

“The value of this study is its presentation of the first concrete research relating to the untenable economic plight of young dancers, choreographers and administrators working within the dance field in New York City. While no answers are posed, the need to find answers is made evident. If the passion, discipline and creativity of these individuals is not to be wasted, it must be allowed to flourish in a way that confirms that dance is, indeed, a respected profession — a place where achievement is recognized by the ability to earn a living wage, with appropriate health insurance benefits and a modicum of financial stability.”

"She has a naturalistic, exotic quality.  With her arms spread wide and poised on one leg, she appears as a bird in flight."  ~Wendy Liberatore, Daily Gazette
